Committee Overview
The purpose of the General Assembly 1st committee on Disarmament and International Security of the United Nations is to provide an open forum for debate on topics and issues dealing with disarmament and othe matters of international security and to provide acceptable solutions to these issues. Membership in the GA 1st committee is open ot all United Nations member states and certain states or entites with observer status such as the Holy See, Palestine, NGOs, IGOs, and some MNCs. Each member state is granted one vote in debate while observer groups are not granted voting rights. Membership in the GA 1st committee can be applied for and voted on by the General Assembly, and the voting rights of member states may be restricted if deemed necessary by the Security Council. All member states are granted equal voting rights in the committee, which meets annually after the General Assembly General Debate. member states discuss and debate a set of agenda topics regarding international securtiy and disarmament. The 1st committee maintains no authoritative power and may only pass resolutions suggesting possible courses of action. These resolutions may be passed on to the Security Council for further action.
