Committee Overview
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (INHCR), established December, 1950, by the UN General Assembly, is an organization dedicated to the rights and security of refugees. This security is derived from the basic human rights awarded to each individual from the UN's Charter. The committee's primary objective to procure the protection of displaced persons through emergency sanctuary and camp management has assisted some 50 million people in restarting their lives. Asn an unbiased agency, UNHCR does not discriminate on any account in order to ensure the protection of those who require it most and receive the aid they require. The only preferential treatment the committee grants is for the rights of women and children since these groups are often taken advantage of in crisis situations. The executive committee of the UNHCR today consists of 72 member states. Each day, this committee faces the continuing challenges of securing international safeguards for refugees in a world of increasing hostility towards displaces people. For this simulation, there is an expectation of a high level of debate concerning refugee issues and the social and economic repercussions of these issues.
